Christos Chalikiopoulos, a former journalist and writer, presents his art in wood sculpture through an exhibition in Paphos. His works, created from driftwood, were inaugurated on June 18th at the Hani of Ibrahim.

C. Chalikiopoulos explains that his involvement with wood sculpture began by chance, stumbling upon driftwood on secluded beaches. These woods, carved by the sea and weather, became the raw material for his sculptures.

In contrast to classical wood sculpture, where the artist creates from scratch, in the case of driftwood, nature has already shaped the material. The artist is called upon to continue and complete the work with respect for the natural form.

Chalikiopoulos' works are mainly anthropomorphic, with an expressionistic approach, while some are abstract. The names of the works, such as "Dancer", "Lament", "Gaza", "Lara", "Ha Potami", and "Toxeftra", draw inspiration from the subject, location, or current events.

Christos Chalikiopoulos was born in Corfu, studied History in France, and has lived in Cyprus since 1983. He worked as a journalist in Paphos and in 2022 published the collection of short stories "Something from Them".

The artist believes that art does not necessarily beautify life, but helps in understanding it.
