Dr. Lakis Anastasiades, a cardiologist, honors Dr. Alkis Pierides, recognizing his work as the founder of Nephrology in Cyprus. Dr. Pierides, who recently passed away, left a significant legacy in the field of health.

In 1983, Alkis Pierides undertook the creation of the Nephrology department at the Nicosia General Hospital, having studied at the University of Leeds and the Mayo Clinic. Despite initial difficulties and lack of support, he managed to create a model department, introducing modern practices and training staff.

Dr. Pierides introduced new diagnostic and therapeutic methods, upgraded the dialysis unit, and promoted research, collaborating with the Cyprus Institute of Genetics and Neurology. In 1984, he founded the Pancyprian Association of Kidney Patients' Friends, which contributed financially to supporting kidney patients and medical research.

According to Dr. Pierides, the beginning was difficult, with reactions and obstacles. However, with persistence and support from staff and patients, the Nephrology department developed. Modern dialysis units were created in other cities as well, and important medical procedures were performed for the first time in Cyprus.

In 1984, the first Kidney Histocompatibility Bank was organized, preparing the ground for kidney transplants. In May 1986, the 4th Panhellenic Congress of Nephrology was organized in Nicosia.

The Nephrology department of the Nicosia General Hospital became a model for the upgrading and modernization of other departments, highlighting the importance of leadership and innovation in the field of health.
