Measles Outbreak in the Americas Raises Concerns Ahead of 2026 World Cup

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) warns of an increase in measles cases in the Americas, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
Measles cases have risen significantly since 2025, mainly in North America, where the disease has not been eradicated. In 2025, over 14,700 cases were recorded in 13 countries, 32 times more than in 2024. In 2026, cases exceeded 15,300, mainly in Mexico, Guatemala, the USA, and Canada.
PAHO emphasizes that the resurgence of measles is reversible through vaccination. Measles symptoms include fever, runny nose, cough, conjunctivitis, photophobia, and rashes.
Ahead of the 2026 World Cup, where approximately 7 million visitors are expected, PAHO urges travelers to get vaccinated and take precautions. The U.S. Department of Health states it is working with FIFA to ensure the health and safety of visitors.
