Increase in Liver Cancer Cases in Cyprus

The frequency of liver cancer is increasing in Cyprus, according to the Liver Patients Association and Friends of Cyprus «Prometheus».

The association emphasizes the need for information, prevention, and regular medical check-ups. It participates in pan-European information and awareness actions held every October for the prevention and early diagnosis of liver cancer.

In a statement, «Prometheus» reports that liver cancer is the 5th most frequent and the 3rd leading cause of cancer death worldwide.

Risk factors include chronic infection with hepatitis B or C virus, cirrhosis of the liver, diabetes, heredity, fatty liver (MASH), fatty infiltration of the liver (MAFLD), exposure to aflatoxins, excessive alcohol consumption, anabolic steroid use, and rare hereditary diseases.

Symptoms include fatigue, anorexia or weight loss, fever, nausea, and jaundice.

Diagnosis includes clinical examination, laboratory tests, and imaging tests, and in cases of suspicion, a liver biopsy is performed.
