ELPIDA: 300-400 Children Diagnosed with Cancer Annually in Greece

Each year in Greece, 300-400 children are diagnosed with cancer, according to the ELPIDA Association. 80% of these cases are treated at the “Marianna V. Vardinoyannis-ELPIDA” Children's Oncology Hospital, where 3 out of 4 children are fully cured.
Since 2010, the hospital has performed 51,000 hospitalizations, 221,000 day hospitalizations, and 1,655 bone marrow transplants. Additionally, the Center for Cellular and Gene Therapy has performed 25 cellular therapies, two of which were administered to adults.
Since 2023, a pioneering research protocol has been implemented for the treatment of relapses of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Within this framework, treatments with CAR-T cells have been performed on five children and one young adult with success.
The President of the ELPIDA Association, Mrs. Christiana V. Vardinoyannis, stated that the association supports the hospital so that Greece is at the forefront of cancer treatment. The President of the Children's Oncology Hospital, Mr. Manolis Papasavvas, emphasized the importance of unity in the fight against childhood cancer.
