Vaccination Updates & ECDC Appeal for Seasonal Infections

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has issued a new appeal to member states to strengthen vaccinations against seasonal infections to avoid straining healthcare systems.

In Cyprus, personal physicians have informed patients about influenza and RSV vaccinations, prioritizing the elderly and vulnerable groups. Pediatrician and infectious disease specialist Dr. Maria Koliou stated that RSV can cause severe symptoms in infants, and a monoclonal antibody is available for their protection.

The ECDC points out that each winter, influenza epidemics cause millions of infections and tens of thousands of deaths in Europe. Vaccination rates remain low, while vaccinating children protects against severe infections.

In addition to vaccination, good hygiene and respiratory etiquette help limit the spread of viruses. Regular hand washing, covering the mouth and nose when sneezing, staying home when sick, and ventilating enclosed spaces are essential prevention measures.

Pregnant women, the elderly, individuals with chronic conditions, and parents of newborns and children under five years are encouraged to consult their doctor on how to protect themselves from RSV, influenza, and COVID-19.
