Ten new domestic cases of West Nile virus infection have been diagnosed in the last week, according to EODY. An additional imported case was recorded in a patient exposed in Serbia.
In total, since the beginning of the 2025 monitoring period, 17 domestic cases have been diagnosed in Greece. Of these, 14 presented severe manifestations such as encephalitis, meningitis, or acute flaccid paralysis.
Cases have been recorded in 15 municipalities, in the Regional Units of West Attica, West Athens, Piraeus, Islands, East Attica, Ilia, Evros and Larissa.
EODY recommends adhering to personal protection measures against mosquitoes throughout the country.
Cases have also been recorded in Romania and Italy, where deaths have also occurred.
The virus is mainly transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes, which are infected by infected birds.
