Research: How Dangerous is Eating Late at Night?

New research reveals that eating late at night can negatively impact blood sugar control.

According to researchers from the German Institute of Human Nutrition in Potsdam-Rehbrücke (DIfE), consuming meals at times that are not synchronized with the natural light-dark cycle can disrupt the body's internal 'clocks,' leading to metabolic consequences.

The study, published in the scientific journal eBioMedicine, examined the relationship between blood sugar metabolism and the timing of food consumption in the evening, using data from a twin study.

The results showed that individuals who tend to consume their last meal late in the day and close to bedtime exhibit a reduced ability to metabolize glucose and lower insulin sensitivity.

However, experts point out that for healthy individuals without metabolic problems, the quality of food and the overall balance of the diet are more important factors than the time of consumption. Consuming foods rich in fiber and avoiding processed grains and added sugars is important.

For individuals with a predisposition to or a history of diabetes or metabolic syndrome, the timing of meals is more important.
