Obesity Drugs: How Much Weight Returns After Discontinuation?

A new study from the University of Cambridge reveals weight regain after stopping obesity drugs like semaglutide.
According to the study published in eClinicalMedicine, patients regain an average of 60% of the weight they lost, one year after stopping treatment. However, in the long term, they retain about 25% of the initial loss.
Researchers analyzed data from 48 studies, including six major clinical trials with more than 3,200 people.
Brajan Budini, a medical student at the University of Cambridge, explained that these drugs act as a 'brake' on appetite, and stopping them leads to rapid weight regain.
Steven Luo, also a medical student, emphasized the importance of counseling on diet and exercise to reduce the risk of weight regain.
The study points out that maintaining results depends on permanent lifestyle changes.
