Bloating: Causes and Tips from a Gastroenterologist

Bloating is a common problem that can worsen with age. A gastroenterologist from Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Kyle Staller, explains the potential causes and suggests ways to manage it.
Causes of bloating:
As we age, digestion slows down, causing food to remain in the digestive system longer. This leads to increased gas production and bloating. Consuming foods rich in FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols) can also worsen the problem. Such foods include wheat, rye, onion, garlic, legumes, honey, and certain fruits.
Lactose intolerance and the consumption of fatty foods can also cause bloating. In addition, chronic constipation can contribute to the problem.
Tips to reduce bloating:
- Identify the foods that cause bloating and limit their consumption.
- Start by cutting out dairy products.
- Reduce or eliminate foods with FODMAPs.
- Consult a dietitian for a food elimination program.
- Reduce carbonated drinks.
- Avoid eating quickly.
- Prefer smaller and slower meals.
In some cases, a simethicone preparation may help, but its effectiveness is limited. Also, the use of fiber supplements or mild laxatives can help manage constipation.
