Bloating: Why it Worsens with Age & Expert Tips

Bloating is a common and bothersome issue that often worsens with age. A gastroenterologist from Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard), Dr. Kyle Staller, explains the reasons and suggests solutions.
Over time, digestion slows down, causing food to remain longer in the digestive system. This leads to increased gas production and bloating. Bloating includes the feeling of pressure (bloating) and the visible swelling of the abdomen (distension).
Diet plays a significant role. Some people have difficulty breaking down FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols), found in foods like wheat, rye, onion, garlic, legumes, honey, and certain fruits. Lactose and fatty foods can also cause bloating.
Tips to reduce bloating:
- Identify and avoid foods that cause bloating.
- Reduce dairy and FODMAP-containing foods.
- Reduce carbonated drinks.
- Avoid eating quickly and swallowing air.
- Opt for smaller and slower meals.
For persistent bloating, consult a dietitian.
