Gastroenterologist: 3+1 Causes of Bloating

A London-based gastroenterologist, Dr. Ahmed Albusoda, reveals common factors that cause bloating.

Using a straw: Using a straw increases the amount of air that ends up in the stomach, leading to bloating, especially with carbonated drinks.

Antibiotics: Taking antibiotics disrupts the gut's microbial balance. It is recommended to take probiotics from supplements or foods like kefir and sauerkraut, as well as foods rich in prebiotics like bananas and asparagus.

Cruciferous vegetables: Vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts contain sugars (raffinose) and indigestible fiber that cause bloating.

Excessive salt: High salt consumption leads to fluid retention. Increased consumption of water and foods rich in potassium, such as bananas, helps to combat retention.
