New research from the University of Delaware shows that molecules from the guava plant can be synthesized in the laboratory and exhibit potent activity against liver cancer.

Professor William Chain's team has developed an innovative synthetic process that allows the production of these molecules in large quantities and at low cost. The method was published in Angewandte Chemie.

Liver cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer. According to statistics, 1 in 125 people worldwide will be diagnosed with liver or bile duct cancer during their lifetime.

The researchers hope that the discovery will lead to more effective and affordable treatments. Professor Chain stated that their method allows chemists to create the molecules themselves, while Dr. Liam O'Grady emphasized that it opens a new path for further research.

The discovery is a promising step for oncology.
