Chikungunya Virus Outbreak in Southern China: Over 7,000 Cases

An alert has been raised in southern China due to the spread of the chikungunya virus. Over 7,000 cases have been recorded since July in Guangdong province. Authorities are implementing strict containment measures.
In Foshan, the epicenter of the outbreak, patients are mandatorily hospitalized with mosquito nets and discharged after a negative test or a one-week stay. Fines are imposed for not removing stagnant water, and drones are used to locate breeding grounds.
The virus, transmitted through infected mosquitoes, causes fever and joint pain. The first imported case was detected in Hong Kong.
Despite the low severity, public ignorance has caused concern.
