Campaign to Combat False Nutrition Information on Social Media
A new pan-European campaign, involving influencers from eight countries, aims to educate teenagers about false nutrition information circulating on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. The Pancyprian Association of Cancer Patients and Friends (PASYKAF) is participating in the campaign through the European SUNRISE Program.
The Snack or Scam campaign provides young people with tools to distinguish truth from exaggeration, as social media algorithms and food companies often promote misleading or unhealthy advice and products.
The campaign includes influencers sharing content in Belgium, Slovenia, Romania, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Cyprus, as well as a website with tips and interactive tools. The goal is to encourage teenagers to question the information they see online and make informed choices.
A WHO (2024) study showed an increase in obesity and low fruit and vegetable consumption among European teenagers, highlighting the need for such initiatives. Professor Liselot Hudders emphasizes that the campaign aims to give teenagers the skills to question information and make their own choices.
Key messages of the campaign: Nutrition is personal, sources need to be checked, and our clicks matter in spreading misinformation.
