Heatwave: Hot Drinks for Cooling – Myth or Reality?

As Greece experiences its first heatwave, experts emphasize the importance of hydration and suggest ways to cope with the heat. Paradoxically, hot drinks may offer relief.
William Kornrich, a physician at NYU Langone Medical Associates, explains that hot drinks cause more sweating, which cools the body more effectively than cold drinks. This is true provided that the sweat can evaporate.
In addition to water, consuming electrolytes is important, especially after physical exertion. Cold compresses in areas such as the groin and armpits can also help.
Signs of heat exhaustion include cold and pale skin, rapid or weak pulse, muscle cramps, dizziness, and nausea. In these cases, hydration and avoiding the sun are essential.
