Cephalonia: 14-year-old recovers from rare syndrome

A 14-year-old from Cephalonia has recovered after a tough battle with a rare syndrome. On August 4, the young girl presented a severe respiratory deterioration and was transferred to the Karamanlaneio Children's Hospital in Patras.
After examinations, it was diagnosed that her condition was caused by an enterovirus, which caused inflammation in the central nervous system (acute idiopathic polyneuritis). This rare syndrome occurs in 0.81 to 1.91 cases per 100,000 people and caused paralysis in the 14-year-old, which fortunately was reversible.
According to pelop.gr, the moment the 14-year-old recovered after her extubation was emotional. The first thing she asked was to hug the doctors and nurses of the Pediatric ICU, expressing her gratitude.
The director of the hospital's Pediatric ICU, Andreas Iliadis, stated: "Today, on the day of the Virgin Mary, what every intensive care doctor wants happened. The smile of the child who defeated death. The little girl generously gave us a hug and a huge smile."
