Dangers of DIY Face Masks with Garlic and Pepper

Although popular on social media, homemade skin treatments with ingredients like garlic, pepper, and baking soda pose risks, according to experts.
Anatomy professor Adam Taylor warns that these DIY products can cause irritation, chemical burns, or permanent skin damage.
Baking soda is too alkaline, while raw allicin in garlic can cause allergic reactions and scarring. Capsaicin from hot peppers can lead to inflammation and nerve damage.
Even mild spices like cinnamon, ginger, and turmeric have been linked to dermatitis and burns.
Dermatologists recommend using products with a balanced pH and avoiding unprocessed substances. Safe extracts such as niacinamide, aloe vera, and oatmeal are recommended, always with expert advice.
Before each new use, it is recommended to test on a small area of skin and wait 48 hours.
