Maldives Bans Smoking for an Entire Generation

The Maldives has become the first country in the world to ban smoking for an entire generation. Anyone born after January 1, 2007, is legally prohibited from buying or using tobacco products, according to the country's Ministry of Health.
The initiative, approved by President Mohamed Muizzu earlier this year and effective as of November 1, aims to 'protect public health and promote a smoke-free generation.'
The ban applies to all forms of tobacco and to tourists as well. Sellers are required to verify age before selling tobacco products.
Furthermore, there is a complete ban on the import, sale, distribution, possession, and use of electronic cigarettes and vaping devices for everyone, regardless of age.
Selling tobacco products to minors carries a fine of 50,000 rufiyaa (approximately €2,800), while the use of vaping devices is punishable by a fine of 5,000 rufiyaa (approximately €280).
