Kidney Disease: One in Eight at Risk – Early Signs and Check-ups
Share on:

One in eight people is at risk of kidney disease, according to Professor of Nephrology, Vasilis Liakopoulos. Chronic kidney disease is common and often silent, affecting approximately 10% of the population.

In an interview with Πρακτορείο FM, Mr. Liakopoulos, director of the 2nd Nephrology Clinic at "AXEΠA," referred to the new free preventive examination program "Proλαμβάνω" for people aged 30-70 with a history of hypertension or diabetes.

An early symptom may be nocturia (frequent urination at night), although it may also indicate other conditions. Checking kidney function is recommended early for type 1 diabetics and generally for people with hypertension or cardiovascular problems. For the rest of the population, it is recommended after 60.

Mr. Liakopoulos stressed the importance of avoiding excessive amounts of salt in the diet and gentle exercise. Dietary supplements for the gym are prohibited, as they can cause irreversible kidney damage.

New drugs can delay the progression of kidney dysfunction. Collaboration between cardiologist, nephrologist and diabetologist is essential.
