P. Karagiannis: COVID-19 is 'Here to Stay'

Professor of Molecular Virology, Petros Karagiannis, is calling for attention regarding the COVID-19 outbreak. Speaking on the show "Enimerosi Tora," he stressed that the virus will not disappear but is "here to stay," constantly adapting.

The current outbreak is due to new strains and variants of Omicron, which evade previous immunity. Although not particularly pathogenic, high-risk groups (the elderly, people with underlying diseases) may become more severely ill.

Mr. Karagiannis reiterated that the coronavirus has no seasonality, with outbreaks in both winter and summer. Reduced population immunization and concentration in enclosed air-conditioned spaces contribute to transmissibility.

In addition, he warned of increased cases of gastroenteritis from swimming pools and bacterial infections from improper food storage.

Adherence to hygiene rules remains critical to protecting public health.
