Parvovirus is a serious viral disease that mainly affects unvaccinated puppies and young dogs. The virus attacks the gastrointestinal system, causing vomiting and severe diarrhea.

According to veterinarian Eleftherios Ginargyros, parvovirus destroys the cells of the intestine, leading to vomiting and often bloody diarrhea. The infection is usually caused by consuming contaminated products.

Symptoms appear 4-7 days after exposure to the virus and include lethargy, anorexia, and vomiting. As the disease progresses, it causes dehydration, lethargy, and diarrhea. Diagnosis is made by blood tests and detection of the virus in the feces.

There is no direct cure for the virus, but supportive treatment includes intravenous administration of fluids and electrolytes, antiemetics, gastroprotectants, and antibiotics. Vaccination is vital to protect dogs from parvovirus. Sick puppies should be isolated and their living spaces disinfected.

Mr. Eleftherios Ginargyros is a graduate of the Veterinary School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
