Anti-vaccine advocate Robert Kennedy Jr., head of the US Department of Health, is canceling $500 million in funding for mRNA vaccine development, questioning the technology's safety.

The decision affects 22 programs of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, involving companies such as Pfizer and Moderna.

Kennedy claims that mRNA vaccines pose more risks than benefits, while independent experts, such as Paul Offit, dispute his claims.

Peter Lurie, a former FDA official, warns that the US is "turning its back on one of the most promising tools for dealing with the next pandemic."

Since taking office, Kennedy has made changes to policies on vaccines, drugs, and food, including firing the vaccination committee and restricting the use of Covid-19 vaccines.
