Carotid Artery Stenosis: The 'Silent' Threat Leading to Stroke
Share on:

Carotid artery stenosis is a vascular condition that can lead to stroke. Mr. Georgios Eleftheriou, Director of Vascular Surgery at Metropolitan Hospital, explains that the condition is often asymptomatic, and atherosclerotic plaques reduce blood flow to the brain.

Who is most at risk? People over 60 years of age, with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, smokers, and those with a history of cardiovascular disease.

Diagnosis: Carotid triplex (ultrasound), CT or MRI angiography.

Treatment: Conservative treatment (antiplatelet agents, blood pressure and lipid regulation, smoking cessation) or surgical repair (carotid endarterectomy, carotid stent).

Check-ups are recommended for those in a high-risk group, with a cardiovascular history, a family history of stroke, or who have experienced neurological symptoms.
