Dr. Giorgos Pantelas, President of the Saint John Association and Brigade, Cyprus, provides advice on first aid in the event of a radiation leak, even from a distant source such as Iran.

According to Dr. Pantelas, first aid in these cases concerns protection from invisible dangers. It is recommended to stay indoors with closed windows, doors, and to stop the operation of ventilation and air conditioning.

If someone is outside, it is recommended to cover themselves with a mask, scarf, or long-sleeved clothing. In addition, clothing that may have been contaminated should be removed, followed by washing the body with plenty of water and mild soap. The use of a protective mask and gloves is necessary to avoid inhalation or contact.

To support radiation symptoms, Dr. Pantelas emphasizes the need to address nausea, vomiting, fever or rashes, hydration, rest, and immediate transfer to a medical unit. In addition, psychological support, panic and anxiety management, the provision of basic psychological first aid, and information with clear and reliable instructions are important.

Regarding first aid equipment, there should be a kit with gloves, masks, bandages, antiseptics and, if available, radiometers. It is also important to have emergency instructions in printed form.

Dr. Pantelas stresses the need for education and preparedness in the event of a radioactive crisis.
