Health authorities in India are on high alert due to the spread of the Nipah virus, which is transmitted by bats. Experts warn that the virus could lead to a new pandemic with tragic consequences, similar to those of Covid-19.

The first cases were detected in West Bengal, near Kolkata. Authorities have initiated contact tracing and quarantined high-risk individuals.

According to the Press Trust of India, three new cases have been reported this week, including a doctor, a nurse, and a member of the healthcare staff. Both were working at the private Narayana Multispeciality Hospital in Barasat.

The Nipah virus can be transmitted between animals and humans, usually from infected bats or pigs, and can also be transmitted from person to person. Symptoms include fever, headaches, muscle pain, vomiting, and sore throat. In severe cases, it can cause inflammation of the brain and coma.

The virus has a mortality rate between 40 and 75%, and there is no cure or vaccine. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified Nipah as a priority pathogen and has called for urgent research and development.

The virus was originally identified in Malaysia and Singapore in 1999.
