Testosterone and Prostate: New Data on Treatment

Recent studies indicate that testosterone therapy does not increase the risk of prostate cancer, overturning a long-held medical belief.

Daniel Kelly, Associate Professor of Biochemistry at Sheffield Hallam University, analyzes this change, noting that older studies from the 1940s linked testosterone to prostate cancer development.

However, since the 1990s, observations have shown that men with low testosterone often develop more aggressive prostate cancer. The 'saturation model' argues that the prostate is sensitive to testosterone only at low levels.

Large-scale modern studies confirm that testosterone replacement therapy does not increase the risk of prostate cancer and may improve mood, sexual health, and muscle mass.

In men with active cancer, reducing testosterone remains a treatment, but in some cases, re-administration under monitoring does not increase the risk of recurrence.

Men starting testosterone therapy should undergo regular check-ups.
