Deadly Fungus Candida auris: Alert in Europe, Situation in Cyprus

The spread of the Candida auris fungus is causing concern in EU hospitals, according to the latest report from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Cases between 2013 and 2023 exceed 4000.
Microbiologist Dr. MICHALIS MENDRIS, speaking on OMEGA Channel, stated that the report shows an increase in cases in European hospitals, with Spain, Greece, Italy, Romania, and Germany recording the most.
Dr. Mendris emphasized that the fungus is not easily detected as it does not cause symptoms, is resistant to antifungal drugs, and is difficult to eliminate from the environment, especially in hospitals.
Regarding mortality, Dr. Mendris explained that it ranges between 30-70% and concerns individuals with underlying diseases and weakened immune systems.
In 2023, the fungus also appeared in Cyprus, with scattered cases. The Ministry of Health has issued guidelines to Cypriot hospitals for the prevention and control of Candida auris.
The guidelines concern methods of treatment, cleaning and disinfection of the space, isolation of the patient, and activation of protocols after diagnosis.
According to the ECDC report, cases in Cyprus in 2023 reached 13.
