The 'Golden Blood': Only 50 People in the World Have It

'Golden blood', or Rh-null, is the rarest blood type in the world, found in fewer than 50 people. The American Red Cross considers a blood type 'rare' when it occurs in fewer than 1 in 1,000 people. At approximately 1 in 6 million, Rh-null is the rarest of all.

It is characterized by the complete absence of all 49 antigens of the Rh system on red blood cells. On the one hand, it is valuable because it can be transfused to people with rare blood types, but on the other hand, it may prove dangerous for the person who carries it, as they can only receive Rh-null blood.

For example, former US President Barack Obama has blood type AB negative, which is also rare, but not as rare as Rh-null.

Scientists are trying to 'cultivate' 'golden blood' in the laboratory due to its rarity.
