Cyprus Ministry of Health Issues Chikungunya Virus Protection Measures

The Ministry of Health has announced that no cases of the Chikungunya virus have been recorded in Cyprus. Although the virus is not circulating, the Ministry urges caution as the vector (mosquito-transmitter) is present on the island. For this reason, surveillance and prevention measures are being taken.
The Chikungunya virus causes a viral infection transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes, mainly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Symptoms include high fever, severe joint pain, headache, muscle pain, and fatigue. In some cases, a skin rash may appear.
The Ministry of Health recommends the use of insect repellents, long clothing, screens on doors and windows, and the removal of stagnant water. If returning from an endemic country and experiencing symptoms, immediate contact with a doctor is recommended.
