AI Wins Gold Medal at International Mathematical Olympiad

Researchers at OpenAI have developed an experimental artificial intelligence (AI) model that won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad 2025. The AI system autonomously solved challenging mathematical problems, demonstrating reasoning abilities similar to human thought.

The AI faced the same conditions as the students, without internet access. It solved five out of six problems, scoring 35 out of 42 points. Only 4% of the 630 competing students performed better.

OpenAI's goal was to develop an AI capable of understanding, adapting, and assessing uncertainty, knowing when it does not have the answer.
