A team of astronomers has developed a new artificial intelligence tool that has identified rare astronomical objects in images from the Hubble Space Telescope.

The tool, called AnomalyMatch, examined nearly 100 million image snapshots in two and a half days, revealing approximately 1,400 rare objects, 800 of which had never been recorded.

The objects include merging galaxies, gravitational lenses, and jellyfish galaxies. Objects that could not be classified into known categories were also identified.

Researchers David O'Ryan and Pablo Gomez of the European Space Agency (ESA) trained the tool using the Hubble Legacy archive.

The related study was published in the journal 'Astronomy & Astrophysics'.
