Significant UCY Research Discovery on Calcium and Cell Integration

Researchers from the Cell and Developmental Biology Laboratory at the University of Cyprus have published a study in Nature Communications, revealing the role of calcium in the integration of new cells into tissues.
The study, led by Dr. Neophytos Christodoulou and Professor Dr. Paris Skourides, showed that transient calcium increases are critical for successful cell integration. Without these signals, tissue functionality may be compromised.
The researchers also identified the internal circuitry that triggers these signals, which stabilizes the cell skeleton.
This discovery opens new avenues for regenerative medicine and the treatment of chronic diseases. The research was funded by the Research and Innovation Foundation.
