In the film, the 27-year-old actress plays Penny Jo Poplin, a waitress with dreams of becoming a country singer. The story centers on a conflict between characters as they attempt to acquire a rare Native American artifact.

Lionsgate maintained that the film is 'part of a multi-platform strategy, including premium VOD' and that its box office performance does not constitute a failure. Deadline reported that 'Americana' is expected to be profitable for Lionsgate through the Lionsgate Premiere Releasing label.
