Juventus – Roma: The 'Slow Motion' Championship

Whenever the Serie A schedule features Roma against Juventus, there's inevitable reference to a championship decided by… centimeters.

The relationship between the Bianconeri and the Giallorossi has gone through various stages. At the fan level, it was very good for years, but then it changed. At the management level, there were periods of tension and cooperation. At the same time, their matches have left their mark on history. One of them is the famous 'Turone's goal' in May 1981.

Juventus was ahead in the Serie A standings by one point, with Roma following. It was a match that would decide the championship. The Turin side played with 10 players from the 62nd minute due to Furino's dismissal. In the 74th minute, Turone scored with a header, but the assistant referee indicated offside. This decision has sparked debate to this day.

After the match, Italian television analyzed the phase in slow motion. The prevailing view was that the goal was legitimate. However, in 2013, Carlo Sassi, the 'father' of moviola, stated that the goal was offside and that RAI had selected a specific replay to create the impression that it was legitimate.

On the other hand, Gianfranco De Laurentiis, the man who selected the replay shown by RAI, insists that the player was covered. In 2021, assistant referee Giuliano Sancini stated that he did not regret his decision and that, if VAR had existed, it would have vindicated him.
