Munich to Bid for Olympic Games After 2036

Munich will seek to bid for the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Summer Olympic Games, following a referendum where 63% of voters were in favor. Voter turnout reached 40%, a record level for a referendum.

The German Olympic Sports Confederation will decide in September 2026 which candidacy will be proposed to the International Olympic Committee. Besides Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, and the Rhine-Ruhr region have expressed interest.

Internationally, Qatar has submitted an official application for Doha, and India has also expressed interest. Other cities that have expressed interest include Madrid, Istanbul, and Cape Town.
