AOL has announced that it will shut down its dial-up Internet service on September 30th, after 30 years of operation. This service was the first connection to the Internet for millions of Americans in the 1990s.

In 2023, fewer than 300,000 users in the US were still using dial-up services. AOL, which merged with Time Warner in 2000 and was later acquired by Verizon, announced that it regularly evaluates its services and decided to discontinue the dial-up service.

AOL co-founder Steve Case expressed his emotion at the end of an era, recognizing the historical significance of the service.
