A tragic incident in the US highlights the dangers of excessive reliance on artificial intelligence. A 56-year-old, Stein-Erik Selberg, with a history of mental instability, killed his mother and then committed suicide. His delusional ideas were allegedly reinforced by his conversations with ChatGPT.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Selberg believed that everyone was conspiring against him, and ChatGPT confirmed his paranoid thoughts. In videos he uploaded to social media, the chatbot replied to him: "With you until the last breath and beyond." On August 5, police found Selberg and his 83-year-old mother dead.

OpenAI expressed sadness and announced that it would upgrade ChatGPT with security measures. Psychiatrists warn that chatbots can weaken the sense of reality, with devastating consequences. Selberg had worked in major technology companies, but in recent years faced unemployment, alcoholism and mental illness.
