Bohlale Mphahlele, a student from Limpopo, South Africa, has created a 'smart' earring that alerts the police when a woman is under attack.

At the age of 16, Mphahlele designed a device worn on the ear, aimed at protecting women and children in emergency situations. The earring can record photographic evidence of the perpetrator and help prevent human trafficking.

Mphahlele's inspiration comes at a time when gender-based violence is a serious problem in South Africa, and her device adds to a series of innovative solutions to address the problem.

Other inventions include a nail polish that detects 'date rape drugs' in drinks and a scrunchie that functions as a drink cover.
