Phone dropped in water: What to do and not to do

When a smartphone comes into contact with water, the user's reaction is crucial to avoid serious damage. While placing the device in rice is a common practice, Apple warns that this method can be counterproductive.

According to Apple, rice is not effective in absorbing moisture and can leave particles in the ports, causing blockage and accelerating corrosion. The company recommends disconnecting cables and accessories and gently tapping the device with the connector facing down to remove water.

Additionally, Apple suggests leaving the phone in a dry place for at least 30 minutes, or up to 24 hours if moisture persists. Avoid using external heat or inserting objects into the charging port.

iPhone Xs and newer models have a moisture detection feature that disables charging to prevent short circuits. Apple emphasizes that the drying process should be natural, without aggressive interventions.
