Putin Approves New State Messaging App to Replace WhatsApp, Telegram

Vladimir Putin has signed a law to develop a state-run messaging app, aiming to reduce reliance on platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram. This move comes as Russia seeks 'digital sovereignty,' especially after Western tech companies withdrew from the Russian market following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Russian lawmakers claim the new app will offer features not available on Telegram and WhatsApp. However, critics raise concerns about state control and privacy risks. Mikhail Klimarev, of the Internet Protection Society, anticipates slowed access to WhatsApp and Telegram to promote the new app.
