Russia Approves State Messaging Platform to Replace WhatsApp and Telegram

Vladimir Putin has approved the creation of a state-run messaging platform aimed at reducing Russia's dependence on foreign applications like WhatsApp and Telegram.
This move comes as several Western technology companies have withdrawn from the Russian market following the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022. Russia seeks to strengthen its 'digital sovereignty' by promoting domestic services.
Russian lawmakers state that the new state application will offer features not available on WhatsApp and Telegram platforms. However, critics express concerns about privacy and personal freedoms due to state control over the application.
Mikhail Klimarev, director of the Internet Protection Society, anticipates that Russia may slow down the speed of WhatsApp and Telegram in order to encourage users to switch to the new application.
