Venice: Proposal for a €100 Tourist Tax

Residents and business owners in Venice are proposing a €100 tax for day tourists in response to overtourism. The proposal comes after the completion of the experimental phase of an entry fee in the city in 2025, which generated €5.4 million from 720,000 tickets.
Setrak Tokatcian, president of the St. Mark's Square Association, argues that day tourists do not contribute to the local economy as they do not buy products from legitimate stores and use public services. Venetian residents feel their city is suffocating due to overtourism.
The proposal has sparked reactions, with some arguing that it would limit access to the destination, while others see it as a solution for the city's survival. Data shows that demand remains high even with the imposition of a fee, suggesting that the problem is the management of tourist flows.
