Japan: Record Demographic Decline in 2024

Japan's population decreased by 908,574 in 2024, marking a record decline, according to official figures. The total population stood at 120.65 million.
Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has described the demographic issue as a 'silent state of emergency' and pledged family support measures.
The number of foreigners increased to 3.67 million, representing 3% of the population.
The nationalist Sanseito party, with the slogan 'Japan First', increased its seats in the upper house.
Japan has the second oldest population in the world, with an average age of 49.9 years.
Births fell below 700,000 in 2024, reaching 686,061, the lowest number since 1899.
