Indonesia: Couple Publicly Flogged for Adultery – Woman Faints

In Aceh province, Indonesia, a couple was publicly flogged for adultery under Sharia law. The punishment included 140 lashes with a bamboo cane.

The couple was convicted by an Islamic court for extramarital sex and alcohol consumption. The woman fainted during the flogging and was taken to an ambulance.

Additionally, four other individuals, including a police officer and his partner, were flogged for extramarital affairs, receiving 23 lashes each.

Aceh province has been implementing Sharia law since 2001. Human rights organizations condemn public floggings, but the practice enjoys strong public support.
