Ecuadorian authorities announced the deployment of 10,000 troops to combat drug trafficking gangs, following a surge in violence in the country. The operation has received significant media coverage.

Ecuador has become a drug transit hub between Colombia and Peru, leading to escalating violence due to clashes between gangs linked to Mexican and Colombian cartels.

President Daniel Noboa's government decided to reinforce security forces. Hundreds of special forces members were sent to the city of Guayaquil to guarantee coastal security, according to General Mario Viedoya.

Defense Minister Giancarlo Loffredo ordered military action in the city, while aircraft with military personnel were also sent to Manta.

In mid-December, Washington announced the deployment of American military personnel to Ecuador to combat drug trafficking.

Ecuador closed 2025 with 52 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the Organized Crime Observatory.

The Ministry of Defense assured that there would be consequences for those who endanger the country's security.
