Ecuador: Prison Clashes in Machala Leave 31 Dead

At least 31 people have died in clashes at a prison in Ecuador. According to the country's prison service, the incidents occurred at a detention center in Machala.

Residents of Machala told local media that they heard gunfire, explosions, and cries for help from inside the detention center. Police special forces units intervened and arrested 7 people.

It was announced that 27 of the deceased died from asphyxiation.
