Bangladesh: BNP Wins Elections Promising Radical Changes

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) under Tariq Rahman won the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh, following the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government in August 2024. According to television projections, the BNP secured an absolute majority in parliament.
Two television networks reported that the BNP secured 197 out of 300 seats in the House, while the Islamists secured 63. Mahadi Amin, a BNP spokesperson, stated that the party will form a government. Tariq Rahman pledged to rebuild the country.
Rezaul Karim Rony, a political analyst, described the BNP's victory as a "victory for a democratic, moderate force." Tariq Rahman, 60, returned to Bangladesh in December after 17 years in exile.
The US and India congratulated the BNP on its victory. US Ambassador Brent Christensen and Narendra Modi expressed their congratulations. The alliance under the Islamists of Jamaat al-Islami questioned the results.
