At least nine soldiers have been killed in an ambush in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria. The attack occurred near the Bindowul community, about 20 kilometers from the town of Karetto.

According to officials, “terrorists planted a mine” on a road where a military convoy was passing. An armored vehicle was blown up, followed by gunfire against the soldiers.

Abba Kaka Tujah, a member of a local militia, said that in addition to the dead, five other soldiers were seriously injured. Northeastern Nigeria has been facing a jihadist insurgency for 16 years, with Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA) operating in the area.

It is noted that on Christmas Day, the US launched airstrikes against ISWA jihadists in Nigeria.
