Nigeria: At Least 38 Killed in Armed Attack on Village

Gunmen killed at least 38 people last night in a village in Zamfara State in northwestern Nigeria. The area is plagued by the activities of jihadist Islamist organizations Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa, as well as local armed groups.
Local authorities confirm 38 deaths, while eyewitnesses speak of 50. The Nigerian army has been deployed in the area for years without apparent result.
The US has carried out airstrikes against jihadists in coordination with Nigerian authorities in the states of Zamfara and Sokoto. Since 2009, jihadist attacks in Nigeria have caused the deaths of more than 40,000 people.
